Parsing DICOM files in a directory with GDCM -

if have directory contains volumetric data variety of sources, pet , 4d ct. know how given dataset use say, vtkgdcmimagereader, load 3d image series of files. handle multiple modalities and/or 4d datasets manually peeking @ tags , dividing files lists , parsing them separately.

is there particularly general way of going or better method within gdcm ? doing seems work feels bit of hack , there must proper way of doing it, can't seem find it.
